The proper name is Gloeocapsa Magma. It is algae. Commonly people refer to it as: The black streaks or mold, what ever you wish to call it. This algae also has friends. Lichen, which is usually round in shape, can come in a variety of colors. Brown, yellow, green, and white. Most commonly roof lichens will be white or greenish white. Green algae (moss) can run in strips along the shingles, or in a blanket pattern such as the black algae.
Our homes all get exposed to common elements, dirt, dust, pollen ,and random debris from your region. How ever the shingles on our roof all include crushed lime stone. This is what give the singles their weight. The down side is, it makes an outstanding food source for algae and moss. You will first see the algae on the north side of your home, due to the fact that it receives less sun light through out the day. Just because you do not see black or green spots through out your roof, dose not mean it is not there. Sunlight dose not kill the algae it just causes it to grow at a slower rate.
